The latest employment reports show two straight years of hiring growth in the technology industry. According to CompTIA, a nonprofit association for the IT industry and workforce, tech industry employment has increased by 193,000 jobs this year, 28% higher than the same period in 2021. Although hiring in this sector seems to be holding steady, there are concerns due to the slowing economy as exemplified by a number of tech giants implementing staffing cuts. The unemployment rate in the tech industry has remained well below the overall unemployment rate in the US. It is predicted that job opportunities for IT professionals such as coders and developers will continue to be positive with most staffing cuts affecting “non-essential” managers and staff.
The highest demand in IT will be for programmers, blockchain processing and security professionals with most hiring being limited to filling positions and not an expansion of staff. The main sectors doing hiring include:
- IT services and custom software development
- Information services such as search engines
- Computer and electronic products manufacturing
Other sectors showing strong demand are for:
- Software developers and engineers
- IT support specialists
- IT project managers
- Systems and network engineers
Remote hiring continues to trend upward with many job postings specifying remote work or work-from-home as options. Data shows that many active jobseekers now indicate a preference for remote or hybrid positions.
Even though there currently is a high sense of caution in the employment sector, the situation in IT seems to be remaining stable. This is good news for students pursuing these types of positions in their NWTC program studies.
